Walkabout Information... Description: Enchanting Eclectus is a term we hear being used to describe this species of parrot. We feel this term is befitting in many ways, such as colour, appearance, mannerisms & behaviours. The Eclectus is a truly sexually dimorphic (sexes are not alike) species. As you can see from the image of one of our breeding pairs at right - the male is beautiful emerald green with flashes of red and turquoise whilst the female is rich ruby red and violet blue. Visual sexing can be under taken as young as three to four weeks of age when first pin feathers appear.

Housing: All of our Eclectus pairs are housed in aviaries measuring 4.5 metres long by 1.2 metres wide by 2.4 metres high. Diet: Pellets make up approximately
50 to 70% of the diet of most of our parrots. Roudybush Parrot pellets
are fed as a base diet to our Eclectus. Fresh food is fed daily and consists
of fresh vegies such as celery, carrots, zucchini, sweet potato, chillies,
capsicum, beetroot, endive, silverbeet and other vegetables when seasonally
available. Fresh fruit is an important part of the Eclectus diet and we
provide access to apple, pear, passionfruit, paw paw and melons when seasonally
available. Added to this is sprouted seed and a small quantity of nuts
such as peanuts and almonds in shell. Breeding: Our Eclectus breed all year round.
We breed our birds in nest boxes rather then logs for the ease of inspection
and cleaning. Nest box measurements are 1 metre high with a 270mm square
internal diameter. Nesting material consists of 50% peat moss and 50%
pine shavings. |

Problems: Eclectus are generally a fairly sound species, however they can be a little noisy at times and may be prone to some feather plucking problems. Availability: Eclectus are generally available through us all year round and if we cannot supply them then we can put you in contact with one of our recommended breeders. Orders can be taken for companion birds as we like to spend more time with birds destined to become pets. All pet birds come with a care pack and a complimentary 1 hour phone consultation voucher with Parrot Behaviour & Enrichment Consultations to ensure you receive access to progressive education on the care and behavioural needs of your companion Eclectus. |
